Dimerized Fatty Acids from Tall Oil (TOFA Dimers), CAS 61788-89-4

Dimerized fatty acids from tall oil (TOFA dimers) are oligomerization (dimerization) products of fatty acids derived from tall oil - a by-product of the kraft pulping process.
Production Process
The production involves three stages:
  1. Rectification of fatty acids from crude tall oil,
  2. Catalytic dimerization of acids,
  3. Distillation of the resulting mixture of dimers, monomers, and polymers.
Distilled products contain approximately 80% dimer acids and have a Gardner color of around 7 units.
They are dibasic C₃₆ acids formed from two C₁₈ molecules of tall oil fatty acids - oleic or linoleic acid. The product also contains small amounts of C₅₄ trimers and C₁₈ monomeric acids.

Industrial Applications & Key Properties
TOFA dimers are valued in industry due to the following properties:
  • Eco-friendly raw material: Tall oil fatty acids are renewable, granting dimers broad hygienic approval.
  • Anti-scuffing properties: In metalworking fluids, dimers enhance anti-corrosion and emulsifying performance of emulsols.
  • Process lubricant: Hydrogenated tall oil fatty acids have a grease-like consistency and are used in metallurgy.
  • Latex paints: Alkyd resins modified with tall oil are used to produce latex paints with improved water/frost resistance and adhesion.
  • Road construction additive: Tall oil derivatives improve the adhesion of bitumen-based emulsions for road paving.
Chemical Composition
Typical dimer acid structure:
  • 10–13% - acyclic,
  • 55% - cyclic,
  • 32% - aromatic.
Dimers are used in the production of:
  • polyamides,
  • polyesters,
  • urethane polyethers,
  • specialty paints and cosmetics.
Additionally, dimers act as corrosion inhibitors and are used in:
  • drilling fluids,
  • fuel and lubricant additives.
