Urea Grade A

Urea is a colorless, water-soluble crystalline compound, also soluble in alcohol, liquid ammonia, and sulfur dioxide.
Urea grades are classified by application: Grade B is preferred for agricultural use, while Grade A is the standard for industrial applications. The chemical properties of urea make it essential in the production of urea-formaldehyde resins and other urea-aldehyde condensates.

Key Parameters Value
Mass fraction of nitrogen (N), on dry basis, %, min. 46.2
Mass fraction of biuret, %, max. 1.4
Mass fraction of total water, %, max. 0.6
Mass fraction of free ammonia, %, max. 0.03
Urea is produced in two commercial grades:

Grade A - Industrial grade
Used as a raw material in the production of urea-formaldehyde resins, adhesives, melamine, cyanuric acid, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Grade B - Agricultural grade
Preferred for crop fertilization. Urea contains the highest nitrogen content (46.2% N, in amide form) among all nitrogen fertilizers, making it the most economically efficient nitrogen source for a wide range of crops.

The key distinguishing parameter between grades is biuret content. Biuret is a standard by-product formed during urea synthesis. Lower biuret levels indicate higher purity and are critical for industrial applications where resin quality and polymer stability are essential.
